MGRO TURNS PALM WASTE INTO ELECTRIC ENERGY
20 February 2020
Bisnis, MEDAN - PT Mahkota Group Tbk. utilizes the potential of palm oil liquid waste as raw material for biogas power plants. This step is in line with the company's commitment to implement a waste management policy towards zero waste.
President Director of Mahkota Group Usli Sarsi said that factory processing activities produce solid and liquid waste. Especially for liquid waste that is not treated properly, it will damage the environment.
Therefore, the company cooperates with PT Gree Energy Makmur to utilize the potential of liquid waste to be processed into raw materials for biogas power plants.
The liquid waste comes from two palm oil processing plants (PKS) owned by the company's subsidiaries, PT Mutiara Unggul Lestari and PT Berlian Inti Mekar. Meanwhile, Gree Energy Makmur is a subsidiary of France-based Gree New Energy, a company that focuses on biogas projects for energy.
“For one factory, an average of 600 tons of liquid waste per day is produced from PKS. If it is processed properly, it can produce methane gas which is useful as raw material to be used as fuel for power plants,” he said after the signing of the Biogas Power Plant Development agreement between PT Mutiara Unggul Lestari and PT Berlian Inti Mekar with PT Gree Energy Makmur, on Wednesday (19/2/2020).
Usli added that in the future the utilization of palm oil liquid waste potential for power generation projects will continue for 5 other PKS factories. This is in accordance with the company's commitment to implement a waste management policy towards zero waste.
Furthermore, the profit from this liquid waste treatment will increase the company's income and as a form of concern for the environment “Currently there are 7 factories. We want all of them to go zero waste, and have a positive impact on many people and the environment,” he added.
Choky YF Simanjuntak, Director-Chief of Business Development of PT Gree Energy Makmur, said the biogas power plant has a capacity of 3 megawatts. For this project, his party prepared an investment of around IDR 100 billion. “With a capacity of 3 megawatts, it can supply electricity to around 15-20 villages around the mill,” he added. (Adv)
