The United Nations on September 25, 2015 has set 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with 169 achievements until 2030. Of the 169 achievements, the SDGs cover three main aspects: economic, social, and environmental. They are a continuation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) signed by 189 countries, including Indonesia.

In the palm oil industry, Indonesia has implemented the SDGs by implementing sustainable palm oil plantation development, known as ISPO, since 2011.

The Palm Oil Agribusiness Strategic Policy Institute (PASPI) said that the palm oil industry has multifunctional agriculture consisting of: economic function (white function), socio-cultural function (yellow function/services), water conservation (blue services), and natural resource conservation function (green function).

“If translated more specifically, the palm oil industry has actually contributed to the achievement of SDGs,” said President Director of PT Mahkota Group Tbk, Usli Sarsi.

Usli explained that the palm oil plantation industry has contributed to significantly reducing poverty levels in Indonesia, which is SDG-1, namely eliminating poverty (No Poverty). The existence of the palm oil industry has contributed to significantly reducing poverty levels in Indonesia. Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto, at a webinar entitled “The Role of Palm Oil in National Economic Development” on Saturday, February 6, 2021, said that the national palm oil industry has contributed significantly to alleviating poverty by creating 16 million jobs. In SDG-2, namely eliminating hunger, malnutrition and building inclusive food security (Zero Hunger), it can be done from palm oil production so that the food industry, including cooking oil and palm-based food, is always available.

In SDG-7, building sustainable energy has been proven by the use of blending diesel fuel with palm oil as an energy source, namely biodiesel gradually from B10, then B20 and now B30 and in Bio Avtur 2.4 percent, and many others.
